Christmas time in Helsinki – Colder than your freezer
I had my final exam yesterday morning, in Java and J2ME. Apart from a few small parts of assignments I have left to do, college is over for the year! To celebrate, last night we had the very last Timpurinkujan dinner of 2009:
- Estonian Black Sausage, Cabbage and Jam
- Korean rice and spicy sauce with Beef and Onion, wrapped in Lettuce
- Finnish Karelian Pastries with Salmon
- Irish Potato Wedges
- French Potato Swirls
- Spanish Paella
- Italian Crepes
- German Almond Cake
- Finnish Glögi mixed with Estonian Vanha Tallinn to finish.
- I hope I didn't forget anything!
We also had a load of candles sitting in the snow outside, which made for a very nice evening, especially when I became the barman in the sauna, serving Glögi to everyone. Great memories
Today is the coldest day of the year in Helsinki so far, according to the weather forecast it was -22ºC this morning, but the clock at Sello was only showing -16.5ºC. pfft, thats nothing.
BlackJack released!
It's my pleasure to announce the release of BlackJack version 1, the game that myself, Olivier and Mischa have been working on for our C++ project for the past month or two. It works for Mac or PC, and you can see a screenshot below. It was developed using the QT framework from Nokia, which means it can be easily ported between platforms, and requires only a few support files to run.

Reindeer Games
No, not Reindeer Games the terrible 2000 movie, but my Java and J2ME project!
It's a project to develop a small game in Java Mobile Edition, playable on mobile phones. I've put it together over the last 2 days, it's my first time ever programming anything in Java so it comes feature packed with some random null pointer errors, but usually it runs ok. I'll be updating it over the next week as I debug it, but it runs ok at the moment.
(Standard disclaimer no responsibility taken for damage blah blah blah...)Russia – Part 3 – Illness
Monday morning began with a hangover and a hearty breakfast in the hotel buffet. We piled on to our bus and left for FINEC, the St. Petersburg state college for Finance and Economics. We were given a tour of the campus, a large round building in the city centre, which I could only truly describe as "average" on the inside, and "crumbling" on the outside. We sat through a talk on the history of the University and the city, and went for a free lunch in the cafeteria next door. FINEC offered us a few students for us to split into groups and talk to, who showed us around the neighbourhood and took us for tea in another cafe nearby.
By the time we started to walk towards ENGECON, a city centre university, I was in no real mood to do anything, feeling incredibly tired and lethargic. I thought it was my hangover coming back to bite me, but later on, when pretty much the entire tour group came down with a bad flu/cold I realised I wasn't alone. The ENGECON talk, and their informational material for our group, was appallingly bad, and gave us all a very poor impression of their university. The title of their pamphlet "Economical education for the progress of Russia" came across as slightly Borat-esque, as did a lot of the very badly written english contained within! On the up side, they brought us into a class of Russian students who hadn't been informed of out arrival, and were really enthusiastic about speaking english to everyone in our class. We visited a small Bliny (Russian pancake) restaurant and then I got the Metro back to the Hotel with Jinsoo, Olli and some others. Slept immediately and hoped for the best for the next day.
Tuesday began with a bit more intense nausea and the very strong desire to stay in bed, but instead we all piled on the coach, and travelled out to the outskirts of St. Petersburg to visit Arcadia, an internationally operating software development company. My spirits were raised somewhat by the lovely snow that was falling very heavily all over the city that morning, making the filthy abandoned buildings all over the industrial areas look marginally less shitty. Arcadia was quite interesting, having started business in the worst of the economic chaos of the early 90's, and grown with a large base of international customers.
Later Tuesday afternoon we took the bus across the motorways connecting the factories, past towering smokestacks billowing pollution into the grey sky, and to Itella NLC, a subsidiary of the Finnish postal company. I assumed that a giant warehouse would be more interesting than a normal sized one, but I was sorely disappointed, both by the fact that it isn't, and that the presentation skills of the staff were extremely sub-par.
Tuesday night was some dinner, straight to bed. Jinsoo and I were getting worse by this stage.
Wednesday could have been the best day were it not for the illness, starting early at 9.30 we first went to Novaya Era, a company which manufactures electrical power distribution systems for marine and military applications. The tour was excellent and the staff were great, but that couldn't prevent me from vomiting half way through the tour, and not feeling too hot for the rest of that morning. Ruuki was second, a Finnish-owned steel products company, and I never thought that a factory whose job is mainly about bending and cutting steel plates could be so interesting. The tour was actually great and made me feel a lot better, before we travelled on to the Baltika Brewery. Next...
Half-way through my exchange
It's been just over 2 months since i've arrived in Finland, and in another two months it'll be Christmas and i'll sitting at home back in Cork. So far it's been a fantastic experience, and a great journey through a beautiful and interesting country. This evening I was at a big birthday dinner in the common room of Timpurinkuja for Daniele Pelosi, who turned 25. After the sauna, and a very tasty dinner, we compared the different versions of the painful game "slaps" from all over europe. Poland's turned out to be the most vicious, but the Italian one won out in the end with some very intense sideswipes! Every day is something strange and new here. Never a dull moment!
The next two months could well prove to be even more varied and interesting - in a week, a long awaited visitor, my girlfriend Laura, is coming to stay for a week, and right after that i'm off to see St. Petersburg in Russia! Period 2 starts on monday, with all new modules including User Interfaces, and Java/J2ME programming.
I might get another visitor in a couple of weeks when another friend from Cork is thinking of coming to visit, and of course to top it all off i'll be seeing the snowy wastes of Lapland in early December. In preparation for the soon to come cold weather, I got myself a nice new pair of warm boots too.
Olympics Presentation for Finnish class
Today I had to give a presentation for my "Finnish for Exchange students" class. I chose the subject of the 1952 Helsinki Olympic games, since I was able to find plenty of information about it online, there was a huge range of things to talk about, and it seemed like a pretty interesting topic in general. You can download a PDF copy of my presentation, it's attached to this post.
I was down at the Olympic stadium in Helsinki earlier today too for a visit with Agusti, it's still very impressive after over 50 years. The 72m tall tower has a spectacular view over the city!
C++ Up Up and Away
I think I finally figured out C++ operator overloading tonight. We've been studying it for the past 2 weeks in labs but I just couldn't get my head around it. Stayed up til 2am tonight sorting out my last few assignments and getting them submitted, it feels like a weight off my shoulders! Now I can worry about the software design project we'll be starting tomorrow
In server news, Dan will soon be putting up his new website on this server. Promises to be interesting, stay tuned...
